We will cover proper technique in shaping steel as well as how to overcome obstacles that can be encountered while forging blades. Proper control and technique will be reinforced throughout the course as we discuss the properties and approach to making any quality tool. We will cover metallurgy and heat treating processes for various steels. Students will walk away from the course with a high carbon, functional blade. No prior experience required.

This course is designed to introduce students to the art of blacksmithing. Fundamental techniques that will be covered: general shaping/squaring/drawing out, scrolling, twisting, planishing, the relationship between heat and force of striking, etc. Students will make simple decorative pieces (such as wall hooks) while incorporating these techniques in a progressive manner. After the first project is complete, students can choose their next project from various examples provided, reapplying those techniques. Expect to learn metallurgy, misconceptions associated with the art, and how to develop proper technique.
