Bladesmithing Basics with Brock Martin

Students will focus on one high carbon blade with attention to forging closely to the finished blade profile and minimal stock removal. We will discuss metallurgy, grain properties, heat treating of knives, and differentially temper our blades. Refining a forged blade, sharpening, and handling a blade will also be covered. Hammer technique and good form/habits will be reiterated and demonstrated throughout the course.

Students must wear closed toe shoes (preferably leather), long pants, and cotton clothing, and should bring a lunch.

Intro to Blacksmithing with Brock Martin

In this one day course, students will learn fundamental techniques and gain a well-rounded knowledge of what to expect with the craft for blacksmithing. We will discuss metallurgy, the behavior of steel, and cultivate proper form while learning a variety of techniques: squaring, drawing out, rounding, scrolling, twisting, punching, and finishing. Students can expect to walk away with a few decorative pieces, including wall hooks, bottle openers, nails, etc.

Students must wear closed toe shoes (preferably leather), long pants, and cotton clothing, and should bring a lunch.

Bladesmithing: Forging a Kukri with Brock Martin
Date(s): May 18, 2019 - May 19, 2019
When: 9 am - 5 pm each day

$380 (materials included) due at registration. 16-hour class. Space is limited to 6 students with a minimum requirement of 3. Pre-registration required. Instructor: Brock Martin of WarFire Forge.

Students will forge a high carbon Kukri along with fittings while learning the metallurgy behind producing a quality tool/weapon. No prior experience required, but a base knowledge of bladesmithing is recommended. Topics covered will include forging vs stock removal, heat treating, and tempering, temperature control vs hammer control, poster, limitations of workability, filing, sanding, sharpening, handle construction, and more. We will discuss misconceptions associated with the art and how to fortify proper technique. Students will walk away with a high carbon (high quality) blade and choose from an array of exotic woods and materials for their handle.

Viking Round Shield Class with Brock Martin

In this course, we will focus on forging a shield boss (raised center) and assembly/construction methods of creating a Viking round shield. Students will have a few different options on how their shield is assembled and finished. Riveting, leatherwork and use of a draw knife will also be covered. Students will be able to choose between different sizes, ranging from 26" to 34" in diameter.

Making a Viking Spear with Brock Martin

When: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, each day

$380 (materials included) due at registration. 14-hour class. Space is limited to 6 students with a minimum requirement of 3. Pre-registration required. Instructor: Brock Martin of WarFire Forge.

Students will design and forge a high carbon spear. Students will learn metallurgy behind producing a quality tool/weapon.  No prior experience required. Topics covered will include: heat treating and tempering, temperature control vs hammer control, posture, limitations of workability, filing, sanding, sharpening, forging the socket, handle construction, and more. We will discuss misconceptions associated with the art and how to fortify proper technique. Students will walk away with a high carbon, functional weapon.

Armor Construction: Making a Gothic Gauntlet with Brock Martin
Date(s): Jul 20, 2019 - Jul 21, 2019

$390 (materials included) due at registration. 14-hour class. Space is limited to 6 students with a minimum requirement of 3. Pre-registration required. Instructor: Brock Martin of WarFire Forge.

Students will learn various techniques involved in constructing armor. Basic shaping, tools involved, leatherwork, riveting, assembly, etc will be demonstrated and practiced. We will be focusing on a German aesthetic, covering fluting techniques in order to raise line detail in the steel. Basic tools necessary for armor work will be provided and discussed for those interested in pursuing the craft beyond the course. Students will produce a complete gauntlet, wearable to their person with custom accents as they prefer.
